Why do some stories travel while others disappear?
For two decades I built brands for a living. And for two decades I felt a nagging misalignment I couldn't name - a hollow, draining sensation that rose each time I was forced to contort a story into something that didn't ring true.
On November 21, 2024 I was laid off from my dream job. That same night, by design, I flew to Rome. I wanted to be at Roscioli's counter with a bowl of Amatriciana and a big Italian red on my first day of official unemployment. Looking back, I had turned to taste and travel for comfort and self-examination without fully realizing it.
A few days in Italy became three weeks in Vietnam and Hong Kong. Then three weeks in Spain, where over a pot of peppermint tea at the Hotel Cristina in San Sebastián, something locked in. Movement had broken the spell of inertia that had tethered me to the wrong path for far too long. I founded The Untethered Traveler and kept moving.
Travel became my laboratory. The more intentionally I moved through the world, the more I realized that the extraordinary places, products and people I encountered shared something in common. They weren't performing. They were expressing something true. And true things travel - through presence, through encounter, through felt experience - without a single sponsored post.
Mexico City made it undeniable. A sign at the entrance to the Anthropology Museum stopped me: what separates humans from other species is the ability to reason and create culture. Then a t-shirt on the staff at Baldio, a Green Michelin-starred restaurant built on ancient corn and ancestral practice: El Futuro es Ancestral. The future is ancestral.
